Thank you to over 60 local and regional members of our community for participating in our COMBINE 2023. We were pleased to be able to celebrate our artisan talent through amazing food from Marianne & Stuart at Pickled Sisters Cafe; Sal's exemplary wines from All Saints Estate; Bruce and Tony's duo Can't Find My Keys delivering music mastery & a little whisky on the side from Corowa Distillery. For many of us it was an opportunity to celebrate the inspirational art from Robert Klein-Boonshcate. Over the last 2 years Jen and I have come to not only appreciate the art but also the person. Unfortunately Robert was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer in late December - one cancer that is particularly cruel. Such news causes people to react in different ways. For Robert, his approach has been as inspirational as his art. So COMBINE 2023 celebrated ALL the great things in our region, but in particular we gathered to celebrate Robert Klein-Boonschate.    I had spoken to Robert a week ago in Eldorado if he would be willing to share his recent challenges and how he is dealing with the reality of such an aggressive cancer.  The inevitability and how one rationalises this. The work is by talented Lorraine Connelly-Northey, using materials found on her and her mother's Waradgerie (Wiradjuri) Country. It was commissioned by Murray Art Museum Albury - known as MAMA in 2017 and is again on show until September. On Country is a nuanced consideration of the Murray River and maps the path of the vital waterways as it courses through the twin cities of Albury and Wodonga. MAMA says "the collection of debris includes the remains of a burnt out farmhouse and the pressed tin ceiling from Albury's former Town Hall. It tells the story that is both intimately personal while also critiquing the effects of human interaction on the natural environment." The work is a map of precolonial settlement and reconsiders the river not as a divisive border but a shared resource, as it has always been. It is an assertive statement of connection to place. You really don’t know where to look first at this beautiful engrossing work.
