Old buildings tell stories — through their walls, textures, and the people who care for them. CIRCA 1936 is one such building, shaped not only by time, but by the commitment of those who believed it deserved to be protected, restored, and experienced.

Today, CIRCA 1936 is a boutique luxury accommodation, bar and lounge, welcoming guests seeking something deeply personal — a place where heritage, comfort and understated luxury come together. On Friday evenings and select events, the bar and lounge come alive, offering a relaxed yet refined setting that complements the building’s art deco soul.

A Building Loved Across Generations

Originally built in 1936, this much-loved former Rural Bank of NSW building began its renewal journey under Kevin and Ririn Yaxley, who first recognised its potential. Their early refurbishment and care laid the foundation for what CIRCA 1936 would later become, ensuring the building’s character and presence were respected rather than erased.

When the Building Asked for Love

Exactly ten years later, time once again made itself visible. Cracks appeared in the walls, colours softened, and the building quietly signalled that it needed attention.

When current owner John Crothers took on the property, he knew this wasn’t something that could be ignored.

“Some people might look at a renovation like this and think it’s not worth it,” John says.

“But when you see cracks in the walls and the building starting to fade, you can’t just leave it. On the face of it, it needed some love – like we all do.”

For John, the decision was clear.

“I couldn’t let the cracks ruin the look of the building. If we were going to do it, we had to do it properly.”

A Vision Rooted in Care and Respect

John’s approach was guided by respect for the building’s history and integrity. Rather than masking imperfections, the refurbishment focused on restoring original character while introducing contemporary comforts with subtlety and restraint.

A key part of this journey was working with local tradespeople, led by Sam Carpenter, whose craftsmanship and personal passion ensured that all works complemented the beauty, heritage and architectural significance of the building.

Every decision — from materials to finishes — was made carefully, allowing old and new to exist in quiet harmony.

The renovation was carried out with patience and skilled workmanship, focusing on:

“If you’re going to take on a building like this,” John reflects,

“you have a responsibility to look after it.”

Yeddonba , recently reopened within the Chiltern–Mount Pilot National Park , offers visitors a journey through culture, time, and country — a connection to the First Nations history of this remarkable region.

Yeddonba sits within the traditional lands of the Dhudhuroa and Bangerang peoples, where ochre paintings and cultural markers date back thousands of years.

The walk, guided by interpretive signage, gently introduces visitors to sacred stories — including the striking depiction of the Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) — a painting thought to be more than 2,000 years old.

Stepping into the old and new wings of the Art Gallery of NSW, I was drawn to pieces that evoke the spirit of an era that resonates deeply with the essence of CIRCA 1936 Art Hotel.

One such piece is a stunning bronze sculpture by Marjorie Fletcher, dated 1936, located in the Naala Nura galleries. This exquisite work captures the delicate balance of form and fluidity, reflecting Fletcher’s distinctive style. The bronze figure, signed and dated by the artist, is a testament to the craft of the time, symbolizing a connection between past and present—a parallel we strive to create at CIRCA 1936.

The Art Gallery’s collection further reveals the avant-garde spirit of the 1930s through works by Jean Appleton. Appleton, a pioneering modernist, embraced cubism in her paintings—a rare style in Australian art of the period. When one thinks of CIRCA 1936, the image of refined elegance intertwined with unique cultural inspirations comes to mind. This connection is deeply rooted in the origins of CIRCA 1936, which began in 2015 as a partnership with Kevin and Ririn Yaxley. Ririn, being Indonesian, now resides in Bali, and her heritage has profoundly influenced the essence of CIRCA 1936. To delve deeper into these inspirations, Jen and I embarked on a 10-day adventure across three distinct elements of Bali, uncovering the nuances that shape the spirit of CIRCA 1936.

Nusa Lembongan: A Tranquil Escape

Our journey commenced with three days on Nusa Lembongan, staying at the remarkable Batukarang Resort . This resort, managed by Troy, who is the nephew of Tony & Jenny Horne from Corowa, stands as a testament to dedication and meticulous planning. Purchased over 20 years ago, the family has transformed this property into a premium getaway from the often-chaotic Bali mainland.

From the comfortable and service-oriented fast boat to the intricately appointed rooms, restaurants, pools, and hydroponic garden, Batu Karang Resort leaves no detail overlooked. A highlight is the Howff Speakeasy Whisky and Gin bar perched at the water's edge, offering a unique spot for relaxation. The pristine water quality and accessible reef surfing add to the allure, making it a must-visit for surfing enthusiasts and beginners alike. The resort staff's warm hospitality and the behind-the-scenes look at their sustainable operations further impressed us, showcasing a business model that sets a high standard for others.

Ubud: Cultural and Artistic Haven

After our serene time in Nusa Lembongan, we ventured to Ubud, stopping in Sanur to visit Ririn Yaxley and her vibrant workshop and outlet, Kitabisa Design Studio . Ririn’s artistic flair and passion for innovative arts and decorations were on full display in the bustling commercial center of Sanur.

Ubud, nestled in the nearby mountains, offers a special charm distinct from the coastal regions. Our stay at Kaamala Resort provided a luxurious retreat overlooking rice fields yet close to the lively downtown area. Opened in 2021, Kaamala Resort exemplifies 5-star accommodation, with villas featuring private pools and quality fixtures reminiscent of CIRCA 1936's high standards.

Exploring Ubud, we found a perfect blend of Balinese and Indonesian retail and friendliness. The area's beauty lies not only in its landscape but also in the harmony and warmth of its people. The resort, catering to honeymooners and luxury seekers, offered us both relaxation and opportunities to discover nearby arts and crafts, emphasising Ubud’s role as an international hub for creativity. We acquired some amazing local art that will beautifully complement the displays at CIRCA 1936.

Our time in Ubud concluded with a traditional Balinese massage at Kaamala Resort, an experience to die for, followed by a unique Japanese dining experience at Shichirin. Despite the rain, it only added to the charm of Ubud, with the lush rice fields and vibrant greenery enhancing the cultural immersion.

Seminyak: Bustling Adventure

Next, we headed to Seminyak, which presents itself in various shapes and sizes. The traffic, noise, and constant negotiations are all part of the experience. While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, those enticed by adventure will find Seminyak intriguing.

For those planning a visit, we highly recommend the Colony Hotel. Location is everything, and the Colony Hotel is perfectly placed to experience the best of Seminyak. Amidst the bustling activity, the Colony Hotel serves as an oasis. Next door, Kim Soo offers excellent retail therapy along with great food and coffee. Nearby art galleries, including the notable Feliz Eye Art Gallery , showcase the best of local and international artists, adding to the cultural richness of the area.

Here, at this picturesque spot by the water in Bundalong, the Squires family blends their passion for viticulture with sustainable practices, offering delightful wines and a warm welcome to all visitors.

Adding a unique twist to our regional Victoria adventure, we made a stop at Cactus Country near Cobram. This botanical garden started from the passion of Jim Halls, whose fascination with cacti began in his childhood, inspired by his father’s collection. Over the years, it has evolved from half an acre to over 8 acres, now boasting a vast collection of cacti and succulents gathered from around the world. Visitors to Cactus Country can see the ongoing expansions and feel Jim’s enduring passion for these resilient plants. With its fascinating array of shapes and colours, Cactus Country offers more than just a botanical experience—it’s a testament to the dedication and vision of its founders, promising a unique and enriching visit for all who explore its paths.

Next, we ventured into the natural splendour of Barmah National Park , a place of deep cultural significance and stunning ecological diversity. Home to the ancient River Red Gums and rich indigenous heritage, it offers serene trails and a peaceful escape in nature's embrace.

Our culinary adventure continued with a degustation at Junction Moama , where local flavours and matching wines tell a story of the region's vibrant community and history. This establishment stands on the site of the original Junction Inn, reflecting the spirit of camaraderie and connection that defines the area.

The historic Port of Echuca offered a vivid glimpse into the bustling river trade era. Once a thriving hub for paddle steamers, today it stands as a tribute to its storied past, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience the lively river scene.

Venturing deeper into Victoria, we visited Tellurian Wines in Heathcote, where we were captivated by the dedication of Ian Hopkins and his team to producing superb wines reflective of the region’s unique terroir. The vineyard’s diverse offerings, from classic Shiraz to Italian varietals like Nero d’Avola and Fiano, showcased the versatility and rich wine heritage of Heathcote.

Adding to the allure of Bendigo is the city's current celebration, "Bonjour Bendigo," a vibrant campaign that transforms Bendigo into the city of love and light. Coinciding with the exclusive Bendigo Art Gallery exhibition, Paris: Impressions of Life 1880-1925, the campaign features over 40 themed experiences and events. From French food and culture to art and unique experiences, Bendigo is embracing its similarities with Paris—rich in culture, heritage, and gastronomy. The city streets are adorned with the tricolors of the French flag, enhancing the vibrancy of the region and offering visitors and residents a plethora of activities to enjoy, from Paris-themed music and painting activities to French-themed menus and fashion.

Adding a spiritual dimension to our journey, the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion outside Bendigo mesmerized us with its grandeur and serenity. Home to the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace, it provides a profound insight into Buddhist teachings and art.

Our trip in autumn adorned our journey with beautiful days and crisp nights, highlighting the seasonal beauty of Victoria. However, the dry conditions across the countryside brought attention to the urgent need for rain, which is vital for the agricultural community as they prepare for the upcoming harvest season.
